Before you even think about getting your TIE, you need have been provided a valid Visa to live in Spain for more than 6 months. If you’re only moving to Spain for less than 6 months, you don’t need a TIE.

Once you have received your Visa and arrived in Spain, you need to apply for your TIE within 30 days. Follow the next steps to do so.

Empadronamiento is the process you go through to register yourself as a resident at the town hall of the city or town you live in. It is something all individuals living in Spain must do. Normally Expats will do this later in the process but you will need your Certificate of Empadronamiento to apply for your TIE, so it’s one of the first things you’ll need to do.

Documents you need for your Empadronamiento

✅ Your Passport - The original, and a copy
✅ Your valid Visa - The original, and a copy
✅ Your house contract or house bill to your name, to prove that you are living there - The original, and a copy
✅ Fill in the Empadronamiento form required by the local Government
✅ If someone else is already Empadronado in that home, they will need to sign their consent in your application form and you will need to provide a copy of their passport and NIE/DNI/TIE if they have one

Note: Please note that requirements may be different from council to council so make sure to check the requirements for your location after you’ve booked your Empadronamiento appointment

How to do your Empadronamiento if you live in Madrid

• Book your appointment on this website
  • Click “Acceso SIN Identificar” Select “Padrón y censo” in “Categoría”
  • Select “Altas, bajas y cambio de domicilio en Padrón” in “Trámite o servicio”
  • Below will load a dropdown with all the offices where you can make this application. However, it’s recommended you click on “consultar la oficina con cita más temprana” to see the earliest appointment available in the city.
  • In “Tipo de documento” select “PASAPORTE” and write your passport number next to it.
  • Click “Siguiente” and select a date and time for your appointment
  • Here fill in your name, surname and contact details before confirming your appointment
• Fill in the Empadronamiento Form as per the below. You can download it here:
  • Fill as many “Nº Orden” as many people are registering in this address.
  • If someone else is currently Empadronado in that home, they’ll need to fill in the section “AUTORIZACIÓN DE EMPADRONAMIENTO” with their Name, ID,Address, Mark with a Cross (X) “inscribirse en el mismo domicilio donde consta el/la autorizante” and sign.
  • In “Nivel de estudios terminados(4)” add the number code that best describes your latest education certification - Codes are in Spanish in the appendix of the form. Below are the most common ones:
    31 - Complete school education
    45 - Architect or Technical Engineer
    46 - University degree
    48 - Post-graduate or doctorate
    
  
  

• Attend your appointment with all the required documents. They will provide you with your Certificate of Empadronamiento that you can later use during your TIE Appointment.

How to do your Empadronamiento if you live in Barcelona

The fastest and easiest way to sort this is at the local council in person. There are other ways to do it but may be more complicated. You can Check all of them here. To book your in-person appointment follow these steps:

• Book your appointment on this website by clicking on Solicitud de una cita > Continuar
  • Select “Pasaporte” as “Documento De Identificación” and add your passport number, name surnames and contact details in the following fields
  • In “Selección Telemática” select “OAC: ATENCIÓN PRESENCIAL EN LA OFICINA” and in “Subtema” select “PADRÓN: ALTA/CAMBIO DE DOMICILIO”
  • Select the office and date, time you want to attend your appointment
  • Confirm your appointment
• Attend your appointment with all the required documents. They will provide you with your Certificate of Empadronamiento that you can later use during your TIE Appointment.

How to do your Empadronamiento if you live in Valencia

• Book your appointment on this website by adding the following information:
  • Servicio y Centro: Select "PADRON CP" and choose the office you’d like your appointment to be at
  • Día y Hora: Here select the time and date of your appointment
  • Nombre y Apellidos: Write your name and surnames
  • Tipo de documento: Select PASAPORTE
  • Documento: Add your passport number
  • Teléfono: Add your Mobile number
  • Email: Add your email address
• Print and fill in the registration form, which you can download by clicking on “Impresos”, then “Solicitud Certificado de Empadronamiento" on this website. You can check the Madrid example if you need help.
• Attend your appointment with all the required documents. They will provide you with your Certificate of Empadronamiento that you can later use during your TIE Appointment.

• Book your appointment on this website
  • Select “Pedir Cita”, then “Gestión Tributaria”, then “GT-Padrón de Habitantes”
  • Select a date and time
  • Add your personal details
  • Confirm your appointment
• Print and fill in the registration form. You can download it here. You can check the Madrid example if you need help.
• Attend your appointment with all the required documents. They will provide you with your Certificate of Empadronamiento that you can later use during your TIE Appointment.

How to do your Empadronamiento if you live elsewhere in Spain

If you live in a different city, check in your council’s website or office what is the process of Empadronamiento. If need help with the process, you can start a chat with us and well be happy to help.

The first thing you’ll need to do is book your appointment to register as a citizen and get your TIE card.

When to book

In the most popular cities, appointments can be scarce, and waits can go up to a few months. We advise to book your appointment as soon as possible.

What you need to book

To book your appointment you will need:

✅ Your Passport
✅ Your Email
✅ A Spanish Phone Number that you have with you at the time of booking the appointment - They will send you a verification code
✅ To be in Spain - The website doesn’t work if you’re outside of the country

How to book

If you have everything you need to book your appointment, go to website, and follow the below steps:

Go to TIE Appointments Website

• Select the Province you’ll live in - This is where your appointment will be
• In the next drop-down labelled Trámites Cuerpo Nacional de Policía select “Policía – Toma de Huellas (Expedición de Tarjeta) y Renovación de Tarjeta de Larga Duración“. You can also choose here the office you wish to book your appointment at, but this may limit your options. If you want to get the earliest appointment available leave it blank. Click “aceptar” to continue.
• The page will refresh to show you a list of requirements for this appointment. Click “entrar” to continue. Here you need to add your personal details. Please ensure the information is entered exactly how it is shown on your passport. Click “aceptar” to continue.
• The page will then show 4 buttons. Click “solicitar cita”.
  

• The next page you will have a drop down to select the office to have your appointment at. Once you have chosen a location, click “siguiente”.
  Note: It can be hard to find a slot so don’t be too picky. You may need to try a few locations to see what has more availability. Don’t worry, you can always come back to this page.
• The next page will ask for your contact details. Here you will need to add a Spanish phone number you have with you, as they will send a verification code to complete the booking. Once done, click “siguiente”.
• If there are appointment slots available, they will show on the screen. Select your preferred date and time. The page will automatically reload.
  Note: If there are no appointments available, the page will tell you “En este momento no hay citas disponibles. En breve, la oficina pondrá a su disposición nuevas citas” you can try checking another location or checking again another day.
• Review all the information and make sure all is correct. A security code will be sent to the Spanish phone number given at the start – type the code in, tick the check boxes and click “confirmar”.
• Congratulations! 🥳 Your appointment is confirmed. You will see your appointment code on the page - Save it, as you will need to show it on the day of the appointment. You should also receive an email with all the details.

If you cannot find appointments available

It can be hard to find availability, but don’t worry, if you’re persistent you’ll end up securing your spot too!

Slots normally get updated in the mornings (between 9 and 10:30AM) during the week. To increase your chances of securing a spot as soon as possible, check at this time every morning.

You need to pay a Tax Fee to the Government to get your TIE. To pay the fee, you will need to fill in a form online, print it, and take it to a bank. Here’s the instructions on how to fill in the form.

• Go to this website to access the Form
• Complete the section “Identificación” with your personal details as follows:
  • N.I.F/N.I.E - Add your passport number
  • Apellidos y Nombre o Razón social - Add your Surname and Name
  • Domicilio - Below you will add your Home Address in Spain
    • Tipo de vía: Write “Calle”, “Plaza”, “Avenida” etc to indicate the type of street or address you live in
    • Nombre de la vía pública: Write the name of your street without the word “Calle” as it’s already added in the previous field
    • Num: Add your home’s street number
    • Escalera: You can indicate the staircase in your address here if you have one
    • Piso: If you live in an apartment block, add here your floor number
    • Puerta: If you live in apartment block, add here your door number
    • Teléfono - Add your home phone number if you have one
    • Municipio - Write the municipality of where you live (Provinces are split into multiple municipalities)
    • Provincia - Write the province where you live
    • Código Postal - Write your Postcode
  
  Note: Only the fields marked with an asterisk (*) are compulsory
  

• In the section “Autoliquidación” make sure “Principal” is selected. You can leave the rest empty.
  

• Scroll all the way until the section “Tarjetas de identidad de extranjeros (TIE) y certificados de registro de residentes comunitarios.” And select “.TIE que documenta la primera concesión de la autorización de residencia temporal, de estancia o para trabajadores transfronterizos.”
  

• In the section “Declarante” write the name of the city or town you’re making the application in, in the section “Localidad”, and add the date in “Fecha” in which you’ll be paying the fee at the bank (See Step 3)
• In the section “Ingreso” select “Efectivo”
  

• Complete the captcha and click “Descargar impreso rellenado”
• The page will download the filled form in your device - You’ll have to print it and take it with you to the bank (See Step 5)

Now that you have the Tax Form filled and printed, you will need to take it to a bank, to pay for the allocated fee.

‍H‍ow to find a Bank

‍Most bank branches (with an office) take this payment. You don’t need to be registered with the bank to do this transaction. Just look for “Banco” on Google Maps to see the ones near you and pay them a visit.

‍After you pay the Fee

‍The bank will provide you with a stamped document of two pages - Save this carefully, as you will need to take it with you to your TIE Appointment to prove that you paid for the Tax Fee.

You will also need to fill in the Registration Form, and take it with you for your appointment. Download the form, print it and fill it in following the below steps:

  • Sexo: Indicate your sex. Mark with a cross (X) in H if you’re a man, or in M if you’re a woman

  • Nombre de la madre: Write your mother’s name
  • Domicilio en España: Write your Home Address in Spain

• Fill in Section 3) DOMICILIO A EFECTOS DE NOTIFICACIONES with the address where you would like to receive notifications from the Government moving forward. You don’t need to write this if you would like to use the same address as indicated in section 1.
  • Nombre/Razón Social: Write the legal name of the person (or entity) in this address
  • DNI/NIE/PAS: Write your Passport Number
  • Domicilio en España: Write your Spanish Address
  • Nº: Add your Address number
  • Piso: Add your apartment’s number/letter if you have one
  • Localidad: Write the municipality your Address is in
  • C.P: Indicate your Postcode

• In Nombre y apellidos del titular write your Name and Surnames as per your passport
• In section 4) DATOS RELATIVOS A LA SOLICITUD Mark with a Cross (X) the type of document you’re applying for:
  • TARJETA INICIAL - If it’s your first time applying for the TIE
  • RENOVACIÓN DE TARJETA - If you’re renewing your TIE
  • DUPLICADO POR ROBO, EXTRAVÍO, DESTRUCCIÓN O INUTILIZACIÓN - If you’re requesting a copy of your card because it has been stolen, lost, destructed, etc.
    

• Fill in the below section with the location (city) and date in this order [City], a [day of the month], de [writen Month - see below list], de [year]. Here’s the list of months in Spanish:
  • Enero
  • Febrero
  • Marzo
  • Abril

  • Septiembre

• Sign the form at the bottom, and you are done!
• Make a copy of the form, as you need to take two copies for your appointment.

Before your appointment, make sure to have all the documents you need:

✅ Proof of appointment (with the confirmation code) - which you would have gotten when you booked

✅ Registration Form Filled in (Ex-17 Form) - Two copies

✅ Tax Form paid and stamped - This will be the document confirmation you got from the bank (See Steps 4 and 5)

✅ Original Passport, and a photocopy

✅ A valid Visa that gives you the right to live in Spain - The original, and a photocopy

✅ A passport-type Photograph, in color

✅ Your Certificate of Empadronamiento - The original, and a photocopy (See Step 2)

✅ Copy of the Document that proves the reason of move, such as an employment contract, university acceptance letter, etc..

It’s finally time for your TIE appointment! 🥳 Don’t be late and make sure you have all the documents you need. Even though you have a booked slot, it’s possible you have to wait a while until your turn, and if when the time comes you are missing any documents you will need to re-start the process and book a new slot.It’s possible that the staff doesn’t speak much English so it’s always recommended to have Google Translate on your phone ready just in case.

If everything is approved during your appointment, they will take your fingerprints and provide you with a document that contains your NIE number printed on it. This paper is NOT your TIE and does NOT prove your residency. It is simply a receipt confirming you have submitted your paperwork. Save it, you will need it to pick up your TIE later on.

Before you leave, make sure to ask when you should pick up your card.

Your TIE card should be ready for pick up 20-40 days after your appointment, and you should only go pick it up when you’re sure it’s ready.

  • If there are any appointments available, they will show here. Refresh a few times, and new ones may load. If not, try again another day. Appointments usually get refreshed in the mornings during the week.
